A 3-year-old remained in critical condition Tuesday after four family members fell through the ice on Lake Memphremagog in Newport on Saturday, according to police.

Newport police officers were called to the scene around 5 p.m. after the family’s off-road vehicle went through the ice in the lake’s South Bay and plummeted into the freezing water. The two adults and two children made it out of the water before first responders arrived, Newport police said in a press release.

The 3-year-old received chest compressions from a bystander in the back of a sled while it was dragged toward Newport police officers. The bystander continued to apply chest compressions as officers pulled the child to emergency medical responders, who then took the toddler to North Country Hospital, according to police.

The two adults and a 6-year-old child had an apparent combination of exhaustion and hypothermia and bystanders drove them to the hospital, where they were released later in the day, police said.

Newport police, who did not identify the family members, are still investigating the incident.
